Message Turbo seals leak after the car is warmed up. Smoke on start up indicates worn valve stem seals, and sometimes worn rings. When the stem seals are worn, oil drips down into the cylinder when the car is turned off since its thin, and is burned on start up. Smoke after warmed up indicates worn rings (unlikely, unless very high milage or alot of abuse), worn turbo seals, and also in some cases worn valve stem seals.

Worn turbo seals can also cause a puff of oil smoke when entering and exiting boost, do to the thrust load changing on the turbine shaft. The turbine "seal" is really a very very thin film of oil. When the "seals" wear out, the film of oil gets thicker to fill the gap. When the thrust load changes (front to back, or back to front, depending on wether or not your entering/exiting boost), some of the oil will seap past and be burned up. This is the same reason you get smoke at idle, oil seaps past the larger gap.

Compressor side turbo seals can also wear out, and it will not be noticeable through the exhaust, but the intake track will be coated with a film of oil. Dont mistake it for the same oil that gets sucked in from the PCV hoses over the years, but there will definitely be a substantial amount if a turbo seal is worn, and it will most likely only be on one side.

Generally, any oil smoking issues, are going to cost a good amount to repair, with the exception of a bad PCV valve. A bad PCV valve can cause the same symptoms of a dieing turbo.

Also, watch out for the turbo death whine. Youll know it if you hear it, but i doubt the turbos will be that far gone. Thats cause when the turbo seals wear out so badly, that when the turbos boost, the turbine blade scrape the housing, but dont mistake it for the sound of the turbo spooling if the precats have been removed.
