If you are at your threshold, then you will simply not buy gas at all when the price at the pump exceeds $X.XX per gallon. The major companies couldn't give a crap about your personal demand. If they can make more profits by selling less gas at a higher price than they can by selling more gas at a lower price, then they will continue to do so. It sucks for those of us who fall below the most efficient point of price on the curve, but that's just how it goes. As for side-economics... Sure, if you can change the demand then you can effectively change the most efficient point of price on the curve, however, by simply boycotting one distributor, you are not changing the demand.
