DMV book. But he didnt, so I'll give him some of the research I did when I first moved here: "31. Mufflers and exhaust systems. Prevention of noise. Every motor vehicle, operated or driven upon the highways of the state, shall at all times be equipped with an adequate muffler and exhaust system in constant operation and properly maintained to prevent any excessive or unusual noise and no such muffler or exhaust system shall be equipped with a cut-out, bypass, or similar device. No person shall modify the muffler or exhaust system of a motor vehicle in a manner which will amplify or increase the noise emitted by the motor or exhaust system of such vehicle above that emitted by the muffler or exhaust system originally installed on the vehicle and such original muffler and exhaust system shall comply with all the requirements of this section. A muffler is a device consisting of a series of chambers or baffle plates, or other mechanical design for the purpose of receiving exhaust gas from an internal combustion engine, and effective in reducing noise. An exhaust system is a series of mechanical devices for the purpose of receiving exhaust gas from an internal combustion engine and expelling it into the atmosphere. 31-a. No person shall, in the state, sell, install or use a motorcycle exhaust device without internal baffles, known as "straight pipes". 31-b. No person shall, in the state, sell, install or use a motorcycle exhaust device that is intentionally designed to allow for the internal baffling to be fully or partially removed or interchangeable. This subdivision shall not apply to a motorcycle manufactured or assembled prior to nineteen hundred seventy-nine or a motorcycle registered as a limited use vehicle or an all terrain vehicle pursuant to article forty-eight-A or forty-eight-B of this chapter." So if he can prove his exhaust is just as quiet as stock, he is 100% ok. At idle, I would have to say it is. But, again, if he's not getting tickets, who the hell cares? I got pulled over and ticketed almost every time I drove my z (seriously. Stupid? Yes, but I was ok with that for some reason). I considered it part of ownership. I would be very happy if I only had to waste 15 minutes instead of wasting time and money. If he wants a modded car, he needs to learn to accept the downsides which in his case is harassment, warranted or not. I like Mike, he's a great guy. But he worries too much. If he doesn't want to get singled out in a crowd he needs to get rid of the z. It's an attention getter, we all know that. The more you stand out, the more you're asking for unwanted things to happen.
