Message I've never lived there; only my family. I've avoided visiting the city itself for a long time now because of its awful reputation for crime, and in fact, one time when we were cruising around the surrounding 'burbs, we crossed the invisible line into Detroit and we could feel it immediately - turned around and got outta there. I don't know where exactly we were then, but it wasn't pretty at all, and it felt like walking into a grizzly bear's den.

And yes, it's SO dirty there. We were driving down one street and I was thinking how terrible it looked, and my mom said, "They cleaned this part up recently", and I was like ??!?!? I'd hate to see what it looked like before! It had graffiti and litter and gates over the old storefronts, crumbling brick... very depressed. Parts of it really ARE the dirtiest I've ever seen.

On the other hand, it has some very beautiful parts, and buildings worth preserving. I was in awe of the outside AND the inside of the Guardian Building, which my mom took me into just to admire the interior details. And in some of the dirtier areas on Woodward Avenue, a main street, I could see beautiful architectural details underneath the dirt and signs and stuff, and thought, If they'd just clean up these buildings, it could be beautiful! I hope something good happens for that city, but I don't know what it would take.
