You could get away with less ceiling height - but it will depend on the lift and what you plan to use on the lift [note where the top bar is for the lift relative to how high the ceiling is in the top right corner of the pic; there's roughly 2~2.5 feet clearance]. My lift has a limit bar at the top to prevent oversized vehicles from going through the ceiling. That feature comes in handy when I've got our truck on the lift :-)
The lift was already installed in the garage (detached) when we bought the house 3 years ago. I make sure things stay lubed and tighten the hardware (attaching it to the floor) once a year. As others have already stated - this type of lift gives you the most access to the underside of the car for doing suspension, wheel, brake, tranny, and exhaust work.
