Crutchfield should give you the ballanced level converter for free with a HU purchase, but they may not. The MP3 disc playing is priceless. I only have this capabilty in my Z, and wish my DD could do the same.

As far HU to HU sound quality... on a stock system, I'd be surprised if you could distinguish the differences between two HU's, but you have done some work to the speakers in your setup, so I wouldn't skimp on the source unit. Higher signal to noise ratios, higher preamp voltage outputs, lower THD level etc are all things which contribute to sound quality. IMO, it's worth spending the extra $50 or so do get a well built headunit, even if it's just bare bones (plays CD's, MP3's and has a tuner) to ensure good sound quality.

Another option:

Alpine's base MP3 capable head unit

I've found that on pricgrabber.com for around $150
