The connection between the two sides on an H-pipe is at a right angle to flow, which will cause a scavenge effect. I have heard this as a raspiness in the sound of the exhaust, especially on deceleration, that I think most peeps would not like as much. I believe the flow of an X-pipe is more laminar, but I can't prove it.
