That you think you can control your surrounds to never be put into that situation, yes generally any good driver will maintain distanct. But you can go from maintaining distance one second, and in the next be facing a full collision. Point being even the best and safest driver cant control the actions of the other around you.
Want to keep yourself out of a position where you dont need to make split second decisions, stay at home. I think part of the definition of driving is that you need to be able to make quick decisions and act wisely.
