| you find an item you'd like to bid on, and you think it's worth $100. There's 1 bid for $10.00, and you bid $100.00 If no one else bids, you "win" at $10.00 + the increment. If some shill bids $95.00, you are still the high bidder, at $95 + the increment. You pay an "extra" $85.00 or so. Yes, you weren't forced to bid. You weren't forced to bid $100. BUT, the other bidder had no intention of completing the transaction, the sole purpose of the bid was to suck more money out of you.
