Your theory is good, but "getting" mandrel bends is an expensive proposition. You can buy them separately and have them welded in, but you will not be able to do it for less than the manufactures can do it for. Moral: if you want a mandrel bent system, you need to buy a pro built system. TT vs NA muffs tend to differ a bit. That's not to say they're not interchangeable. It's just that an NA system has to really take care to avoid resonation. JWT for ex: uses straight thru for TT, baffled for NA. You can get a decent system "home built" (perfomance wise) and save a bunch of money. I did it, email if you want more info. NA systems w/o resonators will resonate! Less of an issue on a TT. X and H pipes replace the resonators. (pre mufflers)
