Message I have been on the fence about underdrive pulleys for the longest time. I had an unorthodox pulley on my Z years ago and pulled it off because of an annoying belt squeel and the fact that with the change I lost the harmonic balancer. At this time, there were not a lot of Z's with a lot of mileage of their motors using pulleys for me to feel comfortable that my motor would have been safe without the harmonic balancer.

Well, I decided to revisit my thought process about this and did some research since there have been no reports of motors blowing up due to underdrive pulleys.

Turns out that Nascar and the NHRA both require pulleys with hamonic balancers that pass SFI certification to be on all cars that participate. Nascar has alot of high revving domestics and the NHRA has a ton of low 7,8,9,and 10 secs domestics and imports. I decided that they must know something that we don't and that Nissan engineers due. So I decided to source a Fischer pulley because it has a harmonic balancer. If I couldn't find one, I was going to try to get one custom made by ATI.

Well, I was able to source a Fischer pulley from a tt.net member here. Because I have a NA power steering pump on my car, I had to use a different power steering belt. I ended up using a 2004 Subaru STI power steering pump - it worked perfectly.

************** Ok now the observation part **********

Physically weighing the stock pulley and the Fischer side by side showed a 50% decrease in weight. After the install and driving with it, WHOA !!! .. The Devil revs faster to 3k RPM than before and the power after 4k RPM seems to increase using the butt dyno( which is always good for about 10rwhp :). A faster revving motor is always a bonus with large turbos!

Most importantly - there is none of that annoying squeel and I have a harmonic balancer for my high horsepower Z.

I have a HKS turbo timer that reads voltage and my voltage seems fine. Actually, my stereo puts more of a draw on the voltage than the pulley does. I will probably dyno the car next month or so to quantify the rwhp increase before I put my 60MM throttle bodies on.

Anyway, I was bored -- figured I'd share ...
