| mountain. The problem is you need to protect groundwater from the waste. Groundwater can become tritiated (radioactive) if it is exposed to enough radiation. One nice thing about modern reactor designs is the "pebble bed" technique puts the radioactive isotopes inside a ceramic pellet. As long as the pellet is intact, the isotopes can't easily contaminate the environment directly. Much easier to handle. You still have to be careful of water and dust that gets exposed to the radiation though. Still, as of right now, nuclear power is the only viable alternative to oil. And nuclear power is much safer with the new designs.
