Message	behind you would have a better chance of it seeing you brake. It actually works pretty well. So yes, it has to be above your standard tail lights. A led strip behind the glass would probably work pretty well and not look bad. I would be concerned about visual flow though - since there are no other LEDs back there I think it might look out of place or like a cheap aftermarket tack on.
