Message I'm embarking on yet another rebuild - hope it is true that the 3rd time is charmed. Please provide informed opinions on the options...

1) OEM shortblock - about $3K presumably quality and clearances as good as new. All stock internals obviously.

2) Z1 or similar short block rebuild. Quoted about $3k with Wisco's - rest is stock.

3) Local rebuild of existing block - probably requires sleeving #2, replacing #2 piston - other cylinders and pistons look fine (about 5K miles). Guessing $500 - $1000?

4) Same as #3 but new Wisco's (maybe I'll have a harder time melting forged pistons?) Add $695 to #3.

5) Possibly... salvage local TT wreck and use that stock SB. It is a 91 TT auto with about 80K. I'm waiting for the owner to get out of jail... long story dumb kid. $750 -$1000

I'm not dealing with a JDM salvage - too many unknowns. The goal is to have something that I can drive for 5 years without wondering if/when it is is going to blow up again! The local shop is conscientious but builds mostly stockers for the oval track. The first two rebuilds were theirs... so I'm wondering if it is my lead foot or their skills that keep me on a first name basis. But then again, maybe upgrading the pistons would solve the issue.

Also thinking of installing alc. injection or something to prevent another meltdown. Larger intercoolers would be cool (pun intended) but awful spendy - and not sure if this is the best cooling method for the bucks.

Planning to retain the SP500's and 555 injectors. Though also considering upgrading to the 94- model fuel rail during the process.

Car will be summertime ride and autocrossed, occasionally pushed on deserted highways - but not tracked. Plan to install some EGT's this time to keep a better eye on cylinder temperatures. Goal is to build a fast and reliable car on a reasonable budget - if such a thing can be said to apply to a Z build.

So what is the best build option? Are Wisco's worth the $$? If I spend lots on the SB I'll have less for other stuff like aquamist or IC's. What options would you guys recommend for somebody that has a history of melted pistons?

Thanks for the input.
