Message Consider this:

Take a straw and cut off a 1/2" long piece, and keep the longer end as well.

Then take a paper-towel roll and cut it to the same length of the long end of the straw.

Tape the 1/2" piece of straw to the paper towel roll, forming a cone to taper from the straw to the paper towel roll.

Then blow through each of them. You will find that it is much easier to blow through the 1/2" long piece that opens up to the size of the roll vs. the long piece of straw.

Granted, the proportions of the diameters of these pipes is not the same as in the Z, but it serves to illustrate what is going on.

The reason it is easier to blow through the 1/2 long piece with the towel roll taped to it is because the high velocity gases are only dragging against a 1/2" length of the pipe before slowing down while entering the larger diameter pipe. Because of this lower velocity in the larger pipe, there is less friction to the motion of the air through the pipe.

This is the best explanation I can come up with without breaking out the Calculus book. ;-)
