Coasting in neutral is illegal in most states, I believe. Generally, you want to brake while the gear is engaged until you are at the appropriate speed to downshift, at which point you then resume driving or continue braking. Downshifting and engine braking do not really place any undue stress on the engine unless you downshift too early or rely on engine braking exclusively.
