I drove my parents' mini-van for a year before I got my first car. That really helped me keep focused on some of the basics of dealing with traffic and other drivers and less distracted by the car. But once I got my first car, it only took me about a week to get used to driving a 5-speed. If you ultimately want a manual transmission--which I decided was mandatory for me personally, and which I suggest for anyone else who is willing to learn how--then I'd suggest that maybe you go ahead and go for it now. That way there will be less of a difference to get used to when you transition to a twin turbo.
