I ran 18psi on 91 octane and with 8:1 compression and didn't hear any detonation. I was doing little over 500rwhp on my car with my turbos.
Well after my rod bearing took a dump after 5000 miles, the engine disassebly revealed melted pistons on three of the pistons. The compression was the same on the cylinder with the melted pistons as with the cylinder with no sign of melting. I could see the top of the compression ring in the worst cylinder when I took the heads off becuase of portion of the edge of the piston had melted away. The compression ring was till holding compression. Unless you have some way of inspecting your pistons with th heads on , it is not worth the risk. Also water injection should help lots.
