if you purchase a vehicle from a private party out-of-state (2 hours drive), how do you get it home without the car being registered? in order to get the plates, i need to bring the title to dmv in new york. however, i would have to pay the owner in full to get that title. so am i suppose to pay the party in full, obtain the title and bill of sale, leave the vehicle in his garage (sussex,nj), go to dmv in new york, get the plates and come back to jersey to pick up the car? this would mean multiple trips back and forth. plus i don't like the idea of paying in full and not having the car. or should i pay the guy in full, obtain the title, and tow the car home the same day? but towing cost will be through the roof since its 2+ hours away. or just just temporarily put on the plates from my z and drive home carefully? ;) j/k. i don't think this is too hot of an idea. so... what's the proper way to bring an out-of-state car home?
