My insurance company allowed for supplemental claims, so that as they work was being done, more money could be requested for the repair by the body shop/mechanic. If they allow this, the shop will have no choice but to ask for more money during the repair. That figure is definitely low, but I'm sure the adjuster/inspector was going by the book (the minimal amount of money to fix what he perceives to be the problem). At this point, I think you should send it to a reputable shop and have them start working on it provided your insurance company allows them to make further claims for parts, etc. as more problems become evident. Until an adjuster/inspector can see what else needs to be replaced, repaired etc., they won't be giving you anymore money.
