If you have the title number or the VIN (vehicle identification number), which is usually visible through the driver's side windshield, you can check its history for free on the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles' website:

https://www6.hsmv.state.fl.us/rrdmvcheck/mvcheckinq

After last year's hurricanes, many flood-damaged cars were repaired, issued a new title and sold without full disclosure of the vehicle's history. These are the indicators of flood damage that we printed at the time:

• Rust under the brake or gas pedals.

• A damp, moldy smell in the car.

• A very thin brown line or water mark. Everything below was, at some point, under water (or, perhaps, wind-driven sand.)

• A brand new interior in an older car.

• An unreliable electrical system.
