You're right, the original batteries did require that, but I think they stopped using them altogether. A few of us have found that these Hawker batteries are far superior and tend to last longer (i.e. let the car sit a week, starts just fine). The main problem with the original batteries is that if you ran them low just once, they never fully came back. The opposite of deep cycle, that's for sure! This battery seems to be a lot more robust, but yeah there is a tradeoff going so small.
