As far as reliability is concerned, I am convinced a used car is as reliable as it's past owner. Just take your time, do your homework and carfax it. I was the 4th owner of My first Z, an NA. Two of the previous owners were younger. That car was always breaking in the few years I owned it. My daily driver Honda Civic breaks more then my NA Z did. It was owned by a poor college girl, going to school out of state with no money for preventative maintenance. I bought my tt Z off of the original owner. He was older and retired and did regular maintenance at the dearler. I quickly jumped the Z to stage 5, and the car has been super reliable. All I have HAD to have done in the 4 years I've owned it is tires and oil changes. My first car, a 240sx was also bought off of an elder couple and it was just as reliable. As far as practicality is concerned, its no secret Z's aren't exactly the epitome of practicality. For starters, you only have 2 seats, the rear drive is tricky in the snow, fuel is premium and the cars get about 18mpg. I had aritc alpine snow tires on my NA and it was manageable, but picking up a cheap daily driver proved to be far more practical. I drive the Z quite frequently during warm weather, but I can park it on rainy/snowy days and trips to questionable neighborhoods. I get the best of both worlds this way. If the Z would be a gift for you, you might be able to pick up a cheap beater yourself.
