I think a lot of companies do things like this as a way to get your return busniess. Same thing on my 97" Dodge Caravan. Theirs a check motor light that came on at 80k. So me knowing how to work on the van very well, went and changed everything i.e. fuilds, both tranny filter and oil, pvc, air filter, sparkplugs, cap, wires, coil etc, etc, just to have new and to get the light on the dash to turn off. So after doing all that, it's still their. So I call Dodge to see what the hell it could be. Guys their, comes out and say's, that to get the light off, I have to bring the van in for their 80k service. Which is, just them hooking up to the ecu and it turns off. Guy then say's, that for $30 he could turn it off for me. I said, I'll let that light burn out, before I bring it in,,,,LOL.
