we concluded that although they hadn't gotten many threads to catch on the studs, the other factor contributing to the demise of my quarter-panel was that the old studs were badly stripped already. In an effort to settle the matter, the shop is taking partial blame for sending the car out with that problem, and then they're saying part of it wasn't their fault because it was simply machine failure. Whatever... it comes down to me buying the parts, but them doing the install, painting, etc. for free. All said and done, I'm not going there ever again. In regards to the longer bolts... I'm planning on getting the right ones later. (the z is my daily driver and I didn't have time to wait for that. It's driveable while waiting for the fender, but not for the studs.)
