Message Unlike a dynochart which people usually don't understand and only see peak HP numbers, trap speed is indicative of the *average* power that your engine put out over the course of the run. As the saying goes, slow and steady wins the race. Putting out decent power consistently is better than putting out more power less consistently. It's the area under the curve which counts.

Using trap speed instead of ET also eliminates the effect of your launch. I've launched poorly and got poor ET's, and I've launced well and got good ET's, but the trap speed remains pretty consistent.

If you know the weight of the car and the trap speed, you have a very good idea of the average power to weight ratio, and that's really what counts. Peak dyno numbers are worthless when the power is not usable.
