Message When I was a teenager and constantly in trouble with the law for some kind of vehiclular offense, California had a kind of catch-all offense called "exhibition of speed." I looked it up this morning and the wording has changed a little bit.

"A person shall not engage in ( )2 a motor vehicle speed contest on a highway. As used in this section, a motor vehicle speed contest includes a motor vehicle race against another vehicle, a clock, or other timing device."

When I was young, the cops would use it if you spun the tires, or jumped on the accelerator but didn't actually break the speed limit, or didn't meet the criteria for reckless driving, or if they just wanted an opportunity to roust a kid. Sometimes they would combine it with other offenses if they caught you racing.

I don't know TX law, but I can't imagine a ticket for 'accelerating too quickly' would have held up in court.Maybe he could have written you up for unsafe driving or something of the sort, but hard to think it would stick. It really sounds like the cop had his heart in the right place, and he backed down pretty quickly.
