Message Fed up with having the remote on the visor, falling off, looking ugly, marring the visor and bored... So...

Bought a 1998 PathFinder visor with HomeLink controls off of eBay (~$35)

Using a razor removed the fabric covering around the HomeLink control and then a dremel to remove it. There are two wires, + and -, running to it. One was orange the other white, tested with the terminals in the Z's battery to figure out which was + and -.

Went from this

to this:

The color matches much better than the picture indicates, almost perfect, my camera (or digital camera skills?) are not that great...

After removing the Homelink controller you have to cut the short white ribbon cable and lengthen it. I got some ribbon cable at Radio Shack for this. I then lenghened it approx 5 feet so that the transmitter could be placed where the headlight aimers go. I tried in the area where the trim is between the t-tops but the opener would only open sporadicaly. I am guessing this is due to the metal blocking the signal to the garage door opener. This was an easy fix so no big deal.

Then I painted the controller bezel to match the red vinyl, drilled 5 holes, one for each button and two for the tabs that hold the controller trim. Wrapped the switch circuit board in electral tape and reassembled the removed trim, etc.

Success!

So now I can control not only both garage door openers but have an extra button I can use any HomeLink controller with and IMHO it looks great.

Some notes to keep in mind if you decide to do this:
1. If your garage door opener is one that uses rolling codes for the remote you will need to get a 2001 or newer Homelink controller or do what I did, go to Lowes and get a universal remote for your garage door opener like this one SKyLink Door Remote Control Set

2. I had to lengthen the antenna of the above to get it to work from a good distance, easy to do just add some similar gauge wire to it...

3. Make sure after you separate the controller, the part with the buttons and the sender, to wrap them in electrical tape!
