Increase in pipe volume decreases the exhaust gas velocity, giving it more time to transfer heat to the pipe, as it expands into the greater volume, losing heat in both processes, thus losing even more volume, all resulting in a reduction of exit speed. The exhaust gas closer to the engine hits this gradient of cooling gas at a lesser flow rate, thus seeing greater pressure in that portion of the exhaust.
