If he's road racing and AutoXing, would you tell him he could get street tires too?

I'd advise him to buy Hoosiers. Those are nice. The Victoracers are priced competitively - so those are an option as well. He'd have to decide for himself.

I say if you're building the car for one purpose, build it with the right parts.

I agree. In this case, for a vehicle that will be road-racing, where breaking traction between shifts could result in a wreck, I'd advise him to get a clutch that slips a bit as it engages. The puck-style clutch is very aggressive and is usually recommended for drag racing. The Street Disc will hold all the horsepower, while ensuring smooth shifting, with the added protection of a bit of slip if he mis-matches revs between downshifts.
