Been trying to figure out how the oem oil pressure sending unit works as I have a few of them here and wanted to use one for a different purpose. Couldn't figure out any logic on the terminals, so I decided to pull it apart to see.

Was suprised to find that it has mechanical components to it.. It is just a variable resistor that is mechanically actuated by the pressure on the small piston. It can actually be calibrated too as there is a locknut on the tiny pin riding the piston. I couldn't figure out anything based on the terminals - no resistance, no voltage, nada.. After opening it, you can see that in the rest state, the rheostat wiper blades are not in contact with the resistor windings.. It also makes a lot of sense as to why an old sender unit seems to make the oil pressure gauge hang around 30psi.....
