Message Well, I got the petrobond today and MAN, this stuff is 10X better than using water-bonded "greensand".. I also got some professional parting dust rather than using baby powder and it makes all the difference in the world. :)

I had to build myself a sandbox and ramming table, so I pulled the old Magnavox bigscreen out that had a picture tube implode last year. I was going to replace the tube, but figured I would probably be better off buying something more up-to-date, so the base of the bigscreen has now become my new sandbox. :) It even has wheels so I can roll it around the shop, er, garage.

My welding guy had an emergency welding job come up earlier in the day and he wasn't sure if we would be able to get together tonight, so we are getting together in the morning.. Figured I'd use my time this afternoon to take the petrobond out for a spin.

Here's the new setup:

Here is the mold pattern and the mold is ready to go together - the sprue and riser were punched out just before assembly and I started melting down the 3-4#s of aluminum in the refractory.

I've got this refractory humping along and it only took about 10 minutes to bring the metal up to ~1400F. I let the temp drop down a little before I poured it in and then went to town. Some of the neighbor kids rolled up on their bikes just as I was making the pour - they didn't know what to make of it until I busted the mold apart (shakeout) and this fine piece revealed itself.

What I was mostly impressed with was to see the original stamings in the new casting.

Now the housing has had the holes drilled on the new Ryobi drill press I picked up last week - got tired of trying to punch straight holes with a hand-drill.

The housing is now ready to go up to the dyno shop - I've arranged with the owner and he is open to me using his equipment.. He has a lathe and mill and I'm looking forward to sitting behind the ways again. The surface where the electric motor will sit will be machined parallel to the seating face where the housing meets the block and a bore hole will be made for the orings and retainers. I still need to finish the impeller wheel pattern and cast it as well, but that will be soon to come.

...... "on the bench" .......
