There's no substitute for it. But it hurts every aspect of car performance, so with sports cars there is a compromise. When the differences are a couple hundred pounds, the mass effects on survivability are negligible and it comes down much more to design, with crumple zones, airbags, etc. But if Nissan were to release a 2300 lb car, say, it would fundamentally be at disadvantage, regardless of any safety technology, on todays roads where the average curb weights are probably 3500+. So it IS a concern when they lay out the design parameters.
