You could cut the door panel where the bar is in a radius around said bar and use some 2 part expanding strutural foam to add support for the door panel and then finish off the opening with even metal of plastic painted to match the door panel .... In reality, the postion of the side bars is not as intrusive into the interior space of the car ..... I have seen it done that way many times ( I have also seen it done like Arnel's) if done correctly it still looks fine ... I would not like the area metioned to be flat like the shop is recommending
