Message I recently purchased a set of new turbos, from a respected vendor "A" and had them shipped to another major Z vendor "B". Both of these vendors have done nothing but good for the Z community, and I am not here to bad mouth either of them. The turbos from vendor "A" are new turbos w/ a ported 4 bolt exhaust side, but the do have a new CHRA, 360 degree thrust bearing, larger compressor wheel, new seals, etc. . .so essentially it is a new turbo. I paid to have new turbos, injectors, EGR removal, CC bypass, valve cover gaskets, intercoolers installed, SAFC w/ true dual MAF setup. When I picked up the car, I was told that it was going smoke a lot due to the fact that there was alot of in the motor because of a blown passanger side turbo. I accepted this, paid the rest of my balance and left. Everything was good the car ran great, even though it was boosting 9 psi because of a fualty boost solenoid (Profec B Spec 2). One week after I picked up the car it was still smoking. It does not smoke on acceleration or during boost, it only smokes whenever you coast with the car in gear, and then touch the gas again, indicating that it is probably turbo seals. The motor was compression tested prior to going to vendor "B" and had compression numbers as high as 178 with a low of 164 on cylinder 6. Vendor "B" also verified that the motor was fine and the only problem was a blown turbo. When I was underneath the car installing a new PS belt, I saw oil leaking from both turbos, the passanger side had a lot leaking from it while the drivers side was much less. Keep in mind that the turbos have less than 350 miles on them. I take the car back to vendor "B" and have him look at it, they verify that the turbos are leaking. I asked what would cause this to happen and the response was "it was a bad turbo rebuild":( I then told vendor "B" that the turbos were brand new, and then I was told to send them back due to the fact that they have a warranty. I was then told that the labor would have to be paid again even though the car did not have 350 miles on it. I have contacted vendor "A" and I have been notified that out of the other 25+ sets floating around in the US and Europe that I am the first to have a problem like this.

Thing to consider:
1. My car has new PCV valves and hoses on it
2. Vendor "B" forgot to do my valve cover gaskets, and remove the carbon canister ( they told me they would do them, since I had a written estimate). I also found some vaccuum leaks, as well as the fact that they crushed the plate in between the motor and tranny b/c they put it on wrong(gave me a new tranny plate).
3. I brought vendor "B" a set of SS turbo lines to replace the OEM ones ( I believe this could be the cause of the turbo failure), but they did not use them b/c one of the Earls fittings was the wrong threadpitch, instead the cleaned my stock lines with parts cleaner and then blew them out.
4. Vendor "B" put synthetic oil in my car after I told them that I have never run synthetic due to the fact that I have a JDM motor and I am unsure about mileage. Prior to this I had been using Castrol GTX 20W50 and told vendor "B" I would supply my own oil, but when I got there they had allready put synthetic in it and they told me it would be fine.
5. I was able to contact the turbo builder from vendor "A" and was told that excessive crankcase pressure could cause this and that I should install a catch can as well as switch to a heavier weight synthetic. I don't think this will do anything but I will be checking the PCV hoses and valves even though they are new.

I have spent a horrid amount on this car, and for turbo leaks to occur after less than 400 miles makes me sure that someone messed up. I find it really hard to believe that not only one but both turbos have developed a leak due to a bad "rebuild". So now I am faced with finding who is at fault, either Vendor "A" or Vendor "B". Since I am broke, I am almost sure that I will have to pull the motor myself and take the turbos off for inspection. Guys I just need some input as to what could cause this sudden turbo failure. I will post pics of the leaks when I get home from work.

Thanks,
George
