I live here in CA and it is true. After i bought my Z in 2000, i went to the dealership to get a extra key make. I started to give him the key (thinking they needed it to cut the new one) and he just asks me, Do you have the VIN number?" I said yes but I'd have to go out to my car and get it. I returned a couple minutes later with it written down on a piece of paper and he takes it in the back and then comes back with a duplicate. Mind you, he didn't ask me for my drivers license or registration! After I got home I was kinda pissed so i called Nissan and asked them if i could have my VIN number removed from their computers since it was out of warranty. The answer, "No." I think the only safe thing to do it get a new lock set.
