Many tire manufacturers have become aware of the this issue, in fact several years back. Nitto was one of the first to design a wheel protector into the sidewall of the tires, so that if one manages to just touch a sidewalk curb or something the tire takes the grunt. Nothing will protect better than just plain common sense driving. BTW, if you have an issue with wheels needing repair all the time you should find a place that repairs wheels. I've used a place locally for different wheels (not any that I've torn up) and a buddy actually used the same place for his motorcycle wheels. They can do wonders with aluminum these days...
