fluids naturally flow to areas of lesser pressure, if back pressure is impeding the flow, the less likely the gas will want to leave the combustion chamber and enter the exhaust pipe. IE making the engine work harder to push the gases out, meaning loss of power to do something other than turn the wheels. I don't care how many times it has been 'discussed' in tech, most people are still wrong about back pressure.
