Message With all the posts about Zs stolen in the Northern California area, I inquired with my Insurance carrier today with some questions about my coverage, loss amounts, appraisal, etc. My Z is driven on random weekends and to/from "spirited driving sessions", but otherwise alarmed and locked in the garage. If, beyond my control, I drive it to Starbucks to check out the local gatherings and it grows legs and gets away, I don't want to be stuck saying "I wish I"... Best thing next to Doberman in the car at all times would be a good alarm with remote notification. Second: Proper coverage...

As it stands right NOW, I'd receive blue book value, $14470 plus $3000 for my wheels (which I have declared and pay for on top of my coverage). That is a total of <$18,000. Sure, that may be a fair selling price for my car if I was in a pinch to sell it, but the car is worth more than that to me. That's the 'fair rate' for a car with everyday blemishes and stock, not one that is garaged, pampered, 'never raced' *cough*, and maintained by the best shop in the biz.

To rebuild this car, it would take a near-perfect core, as was the car I started with (50k miles, 25k engine, stock, virgin), that alone is ~$15-18k (KBB on a stock 96' is $17k), plus the plethora of modifications, easily $10k no labor - let's call it $30k to get where I am today. So, I asked how to 'declare' or get the car appraised for the additional value. My agent said that any licensed "whoever" (good choice of words by her) can appraise it (dealership or mechanic), then we can submit the paperwork to the company and wait for a response.

These instructions were vague, to say the least, how has anyone done this? Who is your insurance company, who appraised the car, etc?

Thanks,
SS
