Message not sure what all the talk is about removing the transmission... I rarely do when I pull engines or do clutches, just lower it and pull it back a little to get it clear of the engine block. There's plenty of room in the tunnel to shove it back once it's lowered 6 inches or so on a tranny jack.

I agree, for doing clutches and motor pulls, just pushing the tranny back toward the rear axle is adaquate.
But if you've got the tranny out, why not put it up on the bench or out in the hard and clean it up?

This is why I think it's best to just pull it all the way from under the car. You can do a thorough inspection on a bench and clean it as required. I ended up replacing more then I anticipated (preventive maintance) by pulling the tranny all the way out.

IMHO.
