Message with the implementation of the i-vtec setup in the k-series motors. Up until this point, Honda used a set of cams that had another lobe on them (intake only on the SOHC, and both of the DOHC) that had a higher lift and duration. This setup was both electronically and hydraulically actuated through the "vtec solenoid" which only turned on when recieving a 12v signal from the ecu, and only at a predetermined rpm (generally 5500rpm stock) and at at least 1mph. When activated, it would lock in an almost pin type setup to pick up from the bigger set of lobes for the added air ingestion.

Recently, when the i-vtec system came out, Honda added the ability to change the timing of the camshaft itself, plus or minus 10 degrees if i remember right, in order to smooth out torque and power curves, and for greater fuel economy, and greater power when fully on the throttle. This setup is electronically controlled by an actuator at the end of the cams, based on rpm, and throttle angle.

And depending on the model, the Prelude may or may not have vtec.

Hope ya'll enjoyed this, you've now seen a big glimpse of my previous Honda knowledge. ::shudders::
