it says auto is safer than manual because of less engagement with the car; however, this is contrary to the truth (haha there's no such thing as the truth but we will call it that). The truth is the manual engages the driver more; therefore he/she is more engaged and attentative on the road. People who are daily driving sticks don't have to look at the tach to know when to change. It turns into second nature and you can listen to the engine for tunes to change gears. Sticks staying with cars for 100 years isn't because they are ignorant to the autos, but because it is so good it can last through years of technological advancement. The auto is less engaging and a monkey can drive it. You just push one pedal and it moves you don't even feel like your "driving" and this leaves oppurtunity to do other things, such as: "apply make-up", "shave", "read a book", "talk on cell phone", "zone out of what is going on in traffic". So in summary if everyone switched to stick we would have a stable of much more safer drivers, and maybe even an autobahn :)
