Message First, you need to talk to a patent lawyer, not a family lawyer. Patent lawyers are the ones who do all the paperwork, research for prior art, patent infringement search, etc.

Second, once all the research and paperwork is done by the patent lawyer, the patent isn't actually issued for another 9-15 months after the completed patent is submitted.

You have zero grounds to charge anybody with patent infringement until the patent is issued. So you will have over a year where anybody could copy your idea to make money and you couldn't do anything about it. Are you then going to spend all your time and money chasing down those who supposedly copied your idea to prove they hurt your profits in some way?

And as already mentioned, something that is a common part in a certain industry is not easily patented, and you will not do well with the prior art argument since people have been making these for years.
