Message So, we are going to wait out hurricane Ivan here in New Orleans. The traffic has been horrendous trying to leave. The state police didn’t open the inbound lanes of the interstate to outbound traffic until 12 hours after they were supposed to do so. We live right off the interstate, and yesterday it was a parking lot ALL day. Some of our friends decided to evacuate and got on the interstate and only moved 40 miles in 8 hours. There was a 42 mile (forty-two MILES) backup heading North yesterday. There was a 20 mile backup in Baton Rouge earlier this morning.

Anyway, it looks like Ivan has finally made his long expected turn to the North. So, hopefully he will pass East of us and we will be on the lesser side of the storm. We have stocked up on water (10 gallons for drinking), lots of food, Sterno and propane burners to heat food. We have candles, flashlights, fire extinguishers, etc. Also have a 12V car battery in the house fully charged and a 12V fan for airflow when the power dies, and some 12V bulbs for light.

As you can see in the pics below, we are on the second floor of a brick building, and we have all the aluminum storm shutters up. We also live on one of the highest parts of New Orleans. You can see the GF’s crappy Vibe we drive. (Hey, it’s free, as is gas, ins, maintenance)

Here is where the Z used to live, under a big oak tree. I moved it to the other side of the house where it is more protected. There were some old gates across the opening where the Z is. I sawed the gates off, as I didn’t have faith they would stay put, lol.

Here’s a view of the interstate from our driveway, you can see that most people have left. Coming towards me in the pic is the Westbound traffic, which you can see has almost dissipated. It’s almost eerie outside, as it is quite, which it NEVER is this close to the interstate, even in the middle of the night.

Finally, here is a shot of the underpass in front of the house that is usually packed in all direction. Sometimes takes me 4-5 minutes to drive 100 yards from my driveway :-(
