Don't forget that a lot of these bands that are heavily pushed by the record companies are not real bands at all. They didn't start out as a group of guys jamming in their garage, they started out in a boardroom meeting on the 45th floor of a major record company. They're basically a business venture. The company identifies a need for a band based on the popularity of similar bands in that genre, and forms the group based on a tried and true formula, such as comprising a band of 5 young, attractive, marketable people that may or may not have any musical experience, they could have been actors. People come in and audition for a part, and another employee of the company writes the music that they will perform. They may be a band in image only, but they sure are marketable, and they'll be pushed heavily on the radio.
