I'm not trying to sway your decision (well, maybe a little), because I haven't heard the Alpine PX-177R's. I've heard a couple of impressive sounding Alpine's in the past, so definitely give them a serious listen. How much can you get them for? A quick search on Froogle shows them selling for around $215-$240. Does that seem about right? However... since you said "the Focals are my very first choice", here's another possible option for you to consider: How about the Focal 165V Slim 2-way components for up front? They do cost a bit more than the Alpine's; but if you mail order them you can get them for as little as $273. I'm not endorsing these speakers, because I haven't heard them myself, but this particular model is made specifically for tight spots where mounting depth is an issue. You may want to add them to your list of contenders. I bought all of my Focal's from CBR Stereo; they sell Alpine too. They wouldn't clear my Canadian-issued Visa card (internationally recognized, huh??) but they had no problem with my friend's Bank of America Visa. I'm not necessarily endorsing CBR Stereo either, but my friend and I both got our speakers with no hassles. They arrived quickly and undamaged. That was last year though, so definitely look for some more opinions from other CBR customers if you plan on ordering something from them. I checked ResellerRatings.com to see what other people think of CBR but they have absolutely NO reviews... so order from them at your own risk. And in case you didn't see my now-buried response to your question yesterday (why I chose Focal), or if you just want to see some up-close pictures of them... Click here. Good luck in your quest for ultimate Z sound.
