that is the main problem with them. I met a few FD guys and one had 50k-60k miles and was on his third engine. fwiw even though it is fact that rotories tear up constantly, there arent as many moving parts And I think once you are used to it... rebuilding a rotory is alot easier than rebuilding a v6.
Imho MAzda has done plenty to their reputation by over-inflating HP figures on the Rx8 twice.
