I'm sorry, upon re-reading I think my statement was a bit misleading. It was supposed to read that the most damaging resonance of those dampened by the crank pulley was the 4th order harmonic. Adding balanced mass to any rotating spring-damper system will dampen any of the lower order harmonics as well, it's not just limited to the 4th order as I made it sound. Because of the amplitude of the 4th order resonances, it seems that during development the 4th order is often looked at for damage prevention, vs the lower orders which seem to be addressed more for passenger comfort NVH issues. By the way, NVH is far from my area of practice, this is just some stuff I learned from test cell runs a while back so I figured I would throw it out. If anybody has some more accurate test info please share it, this is a topic that has always interested me. :)
