Message This is pretty much a repost from earlier this week but I if it helps you out...

Nothing special about the heat unit or front/rear speaker install, they were just direct replacement of the Bose units with Kenwood and Infiinity. I set up my four channel Alpine V12 on a rack I built to replace the storage tray, it can be seen in some of the following pics. The setup was two JL Audio 10W1’s in a ported box made of fiberglass and MDF. This was actually my first ever attempt at fiberglassing. I used fiberglass so that I could maximize the use of the spare tire well in contributing to the required enclosure volume. The box was built as close as possible to the recommended enclosure volume specified by JL in the spec sheet, though I can’t quite recall off the top of my head what it was.

I am redoing my setup to regain some trunk space (debating between keeping two in a smaller sealed box or going with a single woofer). Also, the beauty board admittedly was quite heavy (too much MDF) so I’ll be aiming to lighten that too.

However, I could place the T-tops on top of all this with no problem.

The first thing I did was gut the trunk and line it with aluminum foil:

Then I laid down five layers of fiberglass cloth and resin

After it dried (wateproof in 2 hours!) I filled it up with water to determine the volume of the tub. Then I subtracted this volume from the recommended volume and designed a regular old rectangle box to make up the remaining calculated volume. The box and the tub were fiberglassed into one piece.

At this point the port holes were cut out, PVC pipe cut to proper lengths and shoved in, sub holes jigsawed out, and subs mounted, attached to terminals.

Then with the help of some friends (audio installers by trade) we made a three piece cover (right, middle, left)from some hardboard. We could not locate 2.5” portmouths so we added a piece of MDF to hold a grill cover for the ports, and the MDF was cut to encircle the subs. The three piece cover went over all this.

Finally the “triangle” that was cut out was hollowed out to make a cover, made of mesh and speaker cloth.

Good luck, it should be a lot of fun.

Arnie
