Message We have installed a couple sets of PE1420 turbos in house including tuning on the dyno. We have seen some problems with the cars regarding boost which we had determined was related to the wastegates. I know that a lot of other people have experienced unresolved issues with these turbos. We finally had the opportunity today to remove the drivers side divorced downpipe from Lorca's car.
What we found confirmed our suspicions on this issue and what I predict is related to the same problems many others have had out of these turbos.
First off the wastegate flap on the PE turbos opens backwards compared to Garrett turbos like the HKS 2530's or our Stage 3 turbos.
Here is a pic of the PE turbo in the car I took today (sorry for the focus) Notice how the wastgate flap folds down as it opens.

Here is a pic I just took of one of our stage 3 turbos.
Notice how the flap folds up as it opens.

The wastegate actuator arm is on the top side of the pivot point on the PE's and on the bottom side on the Garretts, which mean the wastegastes are going to open reverse of each other. We have never seen this issue with the Garret 5 bolt flange turbos and the 5-bolt flange divorced DP's, which we assume the downpipes were orginally designed for. However on the PE's the wastegate flap is catching and sticking on part of the inside of the small downpipe tube for the wastegate. It is just barely catching and doesn't stick all the time but just enough to cause an elusive boost issue. It is so close that small differences in production from downpipe to downpipe may mean some will not be a problem. However both sets of PE's we installed in house had this problem on the drivers side. Here is the downpipe we just pulled off.

You can see the spot where the wastegate was hanging (the shiny worn spot). We played around with the turbo and the downpipe and verified that the wastegate flap hits the downpipe in that spot.
We are taking Lorca's car back to the dyno tomorrow now that is fixed to do some intercooler comparisons that we will post results of soon.
